One piece of advice I would give for driving is to bear in mind that automatic and manual are not the only options. Brits, especially the older ones, dislike automatics because they tended to be tuned to give more power rather than fuel economy in the 70s and 80s.
You can take lessons and gain an endorsement for a semiautomatic car. Such cars are more common than they used to be. With a semiautomatic, you choose which gear the car goes into and the car handles the rest (ie there’s no clutch).
