London

The British Museum was hot, busy and still probably my favourite museum in London. I’d forgotten that a July visit meant plenty of other people had the same idea. There was far too much to see in one go, but that hadn’t stopped it being one of my favourite things to do when I went into the city.

This was the day trip in my July 2022 video. I was meeting a friend, spending some time doing things I enjoyed and then going to her work party as her plus one. I loved visiting London, even though I didn’t want it as my everyday home. A busy day out suited me much better than living in all that noise and bustle.

Enough to see for more than one visit

The size of the British Museum is both a pleasure and a problem for me. The amount of material is unbelievable, but deciding which plaque to read and which one to pass can be overwhelming. My advice was to allow yourself some time and accept that you’d only see a fraction of it. Trying to see everything in one visit wasn’t realistic.

I was particularly happy that I could visit without paying an admission charge. In the video, I contrasted that with the roughly $25 entry price I remembered for a big history museum in Toronto the last time I’d checked. That was my recollection then, not a current Canadian ticket price. For the London distinction, the British Museum’s visitor information identifies free tickets for the permanent collection; exhibitions have separate ticket arrangements.

It was busy when we went, and I was feeling the heat, but the visit was still worthwhile. The museum remained probably my favourite in London. I was enjoying being there even with the crowds and the difficulty of choosing what to look at.

A bus gave us another view of London

After the museum, we had a couple of hours before the party. The plan was to explore, take some photos and walk around. It was a sunny, warm July day, which I was very happy about. There was time to enjoy being in London before the evening plans took over.

We used a bus and the Underground to get down to Brixton, where the party was. I hadn’t taken a London bus for a long time. Sitting upstairs let us be tourists and see parts of the city I didn’t often see. I don’t go into London all that frequently, so that was a nice part of the trip in itself.

The work party was at Pop Brixton. I thought the place and the people there were very trendy, although I was struggling to find the right word for how everyone was dressed. We had dinner, drinks and some time to socialise. It was a great evening, and by the time I was waiting for my second train home, it had been a long day.

Happy to visit, happy to head home

One thing I love about visiting London is the sense that there is always something different to see. Even if I return to the British Museum, I see things I hadn’t seen before. That was part of why I enjoyed going into the city, despite it being too much for me as somewhere to live.

At the station, I was sweaty, tired and ready for a cold shower. I’d had a great day, but I was also quite happy to be going home. I think I’m more of a village and small-town person. A museum visit, some time with a friend and a party had made for a lovely London outing, and that was enough city life for me that day.
