Stay Healthy On Holiday

Thoughts from Alanna…

If I was a superhero in a movie, my superpower would be the ability to get sick just about anywhere.

But getting sick on holiday is the worst.

Sometimes it just can’t be avoided, but by following some simple steps, you can increase the odds to skipping that horrible holiday sickness.

Stay Hydrated
This one is easy and simple: drink tons of water. I always bring my trusty water bottle with me to cut out the price of constantly buying water. However, if you’re travelling in an area that has unsafe drinking water, it’s best to sell out some money to buy water than possibly drink something that will get you sick.

Watch Your Food
My Dad swears he has an iron stomach, yet he himself is not immune to the wrath of bad food. Old oysters, anyone? Always be cautious of where and what you’re eating. It’s never fun to be stuck in your hotel room bathroom because you just had to try that┬ásuspect-looking sushi.

Sweat It Out
If you’re backpacking around South America, you’re bound to get lots of exercise. However, if you find yourself on the beach for two weeks, make an effort to get some exercise in between trips to the buffet. Staying active and healthy will help your body fight off illness.

Sleep It Off
If you’re running around on empty for weeks, your body will struggle to stay healthy. Making a point to get enough sleep will only help you. Yes, I am an old lady telling you to get enough sleep on holiday!

If all else fails…
I always recommend travellers to bring suitable first-aid and medicine while away. Got a blister from breaking in your new shoes? Band-aid! Sore throat? Lozenge! Getting a cold? Tablets! By having the equipment already with you means you don’t have to waste time at a pharmacy or try to translate medicine boxes to English.

Good luck!
